ABSTRACT

The EIGER project focuses on the design of a propagation environment-independent hybrid GNSS/UWB-based standalone navigation solution that is composed of a Personal Navigation Device (PND) and a localization infrastructure and that is able to meet the today's most stringent Location Based Services (LBS) requirements in both outdoor and indoor situations. The envisaged PND exploits tightly coupled GNSS and UWB positioning techniques to efficiently act in both outdoor and indoor situations. This virtually eliminates the problem of the handover when the PND moves from one environment to another, making itself intrinsically adaptive to the propagation environments. The EIGER project proposes a global approach to resolve this issue by focusing on the exploitation of the efficient joint use of GNSS signals and UWB positioning in order to allow permanent and reliable outdoor/indoor localization.
The PND software and hardware design will be jointly optimized, allowing manufacturing of small and low-power PNDs. The EIGER consortium will resolve a set of complex and multidisciplinary issues to successfully design the envisaged PND.
The main application of this device is dedicated, but not limited, to situations where transitioning from indoor to outdoor, are frequent and unavoidable. The related market segments will be immediately explored by the consortium SMEs through the establishment of efficient and feasible business models and exploitation plans.


Objectives:

  • Objective 1: A novel PND architecture
  • The EIGER envisaged solution (PND + UWB infrastructure) will be subject to two main features: the first feature refers to the efficient joint use of GNSS signals and UWB signals and the investigation of adequate positioning methods to allow permanent and reliable outdoor/indoor localization. The second feature deals with the EIGER PND performance evaluation (localization accuracy and reliability).

  • Objective 2: Hybridization of the navigation and localization techniques
  • This objective refers to the investigation, development and performance evaluation of a Hybrid GNSS/UWB receiver that significantly enhances the localization capability of the current GNSS receivers and augments their localization capabilities through the use of UWB so that they lead to quasi-optimal localization independently of the propagation environments, keeping the focus on accuracy, precision and low power consumption.

  • Objective 3: Study on reference nodes distribution
  • The UWB subsystem operation is strongly influenced by the localization of reference nodes. In every spot in the system operation area signals from at least four reference nodes should have appropriate levels. Moreover, the localization of reference nodes influences positioning accuracy. This objective includes: the analysis of influence of reference node distribution on positioning accuracy, the definition of rules for reference node placement and the development of software supporting distribution of reference nodes (the software will enable the estimation of positioning accuracy in the area covered by the UWB subsystem).

  • Objective 4: Field test campaigns in real environments
  • The near-to-market EIGER targeted solution (PND + UWB infrastructure) should be first prototyped, tested and then validated through field test and measurements.

  • Objective 5: Development of a demonstrator with close-to-market related application
  • An LBS application platform aiming to exploit the EIGER validated solution for outdoor/indoor localization will be developed and demonstrated, opening the door to a new generation of outdoor/indoor location aware services that can be immediately exploited by the EIGER consortium SMEs (licensing, industrialization in specific products…).
